Miscellaneous music

At Intrusion on Tuesday, the music was good in a goth way but not particularly varied. There is usually more heavy rock and some bouncier 80s stuff to get everyone dancing. It was great to see [livejournal.com profile] davefish and [livejournal.com profile] keris again though.

Last night [livejournal.com profile] invisiblechoir fed me some excellent port and tried to expand my musical tastes (we overlap in the mid-90s, but otherwise our CD collections are very different). It turns out that I like Goldrush a lot and I was surprised by how much they sound like the Eagles in places (not in a bad way). The Elected are enjoyable too and I confirmed my appreciation of the solo material produced by Cerys Matthews since she moved to Nashville.

A while ago I promised to tell you about the country albums I’ve fallen in love with recently. This may only interest about two of you…

Long Island Shores by Mindy Smith, a singer-songwriter with the delicacy of Alison Kraus and a hint of Joni Mitchell. And a haunting quality all of her own. Just beautiful. The formatting of her MySpace page really sucks, though.

Humming By The Flowered Vine by Laura Cantrell is lively and lighthearted with some interesting instrumentation. The best songs are the ones she wrote herself, but all the tracks on this album are worth a listen. She’s a great conversationalist (she has her own radio show) and it comes over in her lyrics.

Mud On The Tires by Brad Paisley is wonderful driving music. He’s a fabulous guitarist, the songs are varied in style and there is plenty of insight and humour in the lyrics.

Intrusion did have some bouncier 80s stuff at the end, but not really till the last half hour or so !

Dear god, no! But then, that's what myspace seems to be all about.

I'm amused to see that MySpace are sufficiently self-aware that the first search option the offer is to search the entire web, and the second is to only search myspace.

This leads to much nicer looking: http://www.mindysmith.net/

Music, "goth ... but not particularly varied."

Am I missing something?
