As an antidote to the gloom, I have been buying sparkly things. I went to the Festival of Lights in Beaconsfield on Wednesday evening, when there is a street fair and all the shops stay open late and feed you mince pies and mulled wine. The charity shops had put all their evening wear in pride of place and I found some very sparkly shoes in Oxfam. There had apparently been a whole succession of people trying them on, Cinderella style, and I was the person they happened to fit. Here they are...

Next door (in Help the Aged) I found this fabulous jacket. We don't hear much about German fashion designers in this country, but this piece (designed by Margaretha Ley for Escada and made in Germany) is a great example of craftmanship. The metal-work on the pockets and buttons is amazing and to give you an idea of the attention to detail, there is hand-stitched red lining inside the pockets and there is red lining under the collar too. The jacket is showing some minor signs of wear but is still gorgeous. And it also fits me perfectly, so you will probably see me wearing it sometime soon.
