Exploding pomegranates

Yesterday evening was enlivened by exploding pomegranates shooting red juice over the white curtains. We had two types and only the larger variety explodes. Is this a freak occurrence, or has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know why it happens? I'm mystified.

It's the seed-spreading mechanism isn't it? I can tell you that grenades are named after the pomegranate because of similar explosive properties.
