I'm chucking out the contents of a filing cabinet which belonged to one of my predecessors and hasn't been opened in ten years. It's carefully organised and is full of hand-written notes, with the graphs neatly hand-drawn on graph paper. It has to go (I need the space) but it feels sad throwing away quite so many hours of someone's work.

I feel the same about my university notes, with all the crystal structures drawn and coloured in by hand (yes, I'm that old!). I can't bring myself to chuck them away, even though I never look at them and the blue ink is fading.

I have thrown things like that away and regretted it later. In my opinion if you have an emotional connection with it that justifies the space usage (for papers anyhow), its not such a great luxury and makes me feel connected with my past. The fact that you do not look at them does not mean you do not have a connection with it, its part of you in some way.
