Folk music

My musical discovery this weekend was the wonderful Danny George Wilson, a singer-songwriter in the folk/country tradition with subtle lyrics and great guitar technique. He was supporting The Epstein at the Holywell Music Room and much as I like them, I think he outclassed them. He has an album available on Amazon and I'm about to buy it (he sold all the copies he had with him on Saturday).

I have just arranged to be a steward at the Oxford Folk Festival at the end of March (a few hours work in exchange for a free pass for the weekend). Tickets aren't cheap and being a steward has been great fun when I've done it before at Sidmouth and Towersey. Thought I'd mention it in case any of you felt like doing the same and wanted to try and share shifts with me.

I spent a pleasant evening last Friday helping [profile] kissifa to warm her lovely new house and drinking excellent port. The rest of the weekend was mostly filled with films and board games. I was perturbed to find that the visual effects in Renaissance (particularly the animated strobe lighting at the start) messed with my head terribly and triggered my first migraine of the year. I'm fine with real life strobe lighting, so I'm baffled.

On Tuesday I had a bunch of people round for pancakes. We set fire to some of them (yes, deliberately) which was entertaining and it turns out that Cointreau gives them a good flavour. I still prefer maple syrup on them though.

I saw Hot Fuzz at the cinema on Wednesday. It was an amusing parody throughout, although the first hour was a bit slow. The big shoot-out was well worth the price of admission by itself. There were two gruesome moments in the film which seemed unnecessary.

The acoustics are never great in the basement of the Zodiac, which may partly explain my disappointment with the gig on Monday night.

We went to Intrusion on Tuesday which was busier than usual and full of people in exciting outfits. The music wasn't quite to my taste this time, so I spent more time chatting than dancing. I did prove I can (just about) dance in the black lace boots.

I was touched on Wednesday to receive a card made from beautiful paper with flower petals in it. We had an enjoyable evening cooking an elaborate dinner together in my flat, which was much more fun than going out to a restaurant at the same time as everyone else.

Last week I took Wednesday off as planned holiday and then Thursday was unplanned holiday, due to my sports car sliding around too much in the snow for there to be any chance of me reaching work safely. Both days were relaxing, so I arrived at the weekend already in a good mood. On Friday evening [profile] zandev took me to Gee's in Oxford for dinner. The starters were excellent (I had scallops) as were the desserts. The main courses were fine, but not quite up to the standard of the rest. Overall it was a great meal and the company was good of course :)

I had a party on Saturday evening and proved that you can fit more than thirty people in a one-bedroom flat. Things did get rather hot and crowded, but nothing that couldn't be easily fixed by opening a few windows. I was delighted that so many people made the effort to travel from out-of-town. Apologies to those guests I didn't talk to as much as I intended. Hope to see everyone again soon, although possibly in smaller groups...

I took Friday off work and the morning was spent out in the sun waxing the car. I met [livejournal.com profile] invisiblechoir for a lunchtime gig with free (and very tasty) vegetable soup. The band was Borderville, who had potential but most tracks needed polishing and the endings were ragged. I might see them again in a year or two if they are still together.

I went shopping on Friday afternoon and [livejournal.com profile] zandev took me out for dinner in the evening. The Star of Asia was almost full, which was good to see as I like the owners a great deal.

On Saturday my father helped me clear my garage and put up more bookshelves. They aren’t quite full yet, but it won’t be long, as on Sunday people kept offering to give me books. Of the couple of hundred books I was offered, I only took ten home, so I feel my willpower held up fairly well.

Saturday evening was spent helping [livejournal.com profile] secretrebel celebrate her birthday. The DJs did a fine job and I danced a lot, but resisted the temptation to dance on the table as I don’t think she would have forgiven me if we got thrown out of the Oxford Union. It was a beautiful room and I enjoyed dressing up (and men always look great in black tie).

The Masquerade Ball on Friday was full of fabulous masks and costumes. I wore the dark red dress from the one time I’ve been a bridesmaid (must thank the bride again for not making me wear pink) with long red gloves and an embroidered black silk wrap. The lovely [livejournal.com profile] nickeyb lent me a mask. If anyone happens to have a digital photo with me in it, please let me know.

On Saturday evening I had a meal with some former colleagues. The pub trip afterwards saw us having to run away from an angry man who was threatening to glass everyone in the place. I had no idea that such things happened in Marlborough. It was bridge on Sunday and [livejournal.com profile] quetzyl bid two slams again (he made one but went four down on the other). Sadly I still didn’t have any interesting hands. I wish I knew how he bribed the cards.

Last night was badminton and I played badly. I must get back into practice.

I just tried to upgrade to a paid account and as I don't have a credit card this appears to be almost impossible. I was trying to upgrade to post a poll about things I don't own! I'll just ask the question in rambling text format instead.

I own minimal technology for reasons including lack of interest, lack of space, the amount things cost to buy / maintain and environmental concerns. Do you think any of the following (none of which I own) really count as necessities? I do have a mobile phone.

Landline phone
Television
Dishwasher
Tumble dryer
Computer (OK, so I use other people's a lot)
MP3 player or any other electronic gadget

I don't have central heating either, although I do have double-glazing, properly lined curtains and storage heaters. I've often read discussions on poverty which cite the lack of some of these items as a form of deprivation, but I think I live very comfortably.

I just did a charity shop sweep and found some knee-high black lace boots for seven pounds. The lace is plain rather than pretty, but the non-lace bits are decent leather and they feel like they should be comfortable enough to dance in. I'll try them out sometime soon.

Snow!

The scenery looked lovely covered in snow this morning and the roads had been salted both promptly and properly, so I was able to have fun driving the sports car to work. Well done to the road-salting people.

On Monday I had dinner with [livejournal.com profile] zandev, who I have now been going out with for four very enjoyable months. And last night I stayed in to catch up on phone calls and reading, so I am feeling relaxed and happy.

This weekend was dominated by games, which steadily increased in complexity. [livejournal.com profile] huggyrei and [livejournal.com profile] telpher turned up unexpectedly on Saturday afternoon, so I warmed up with some lighthearted card games (Spooks and Corsari). Puerto Rico in the evening went well. The company was great and I built a factory on turn three, which meant I was rolling in cash for the entire game. If only real life was like that.

Britannia on Sunday was an eight hour marathon and I'm still slightly amazed I found two other people fool enough to play the full version with me. We kept the Romans under control and the Angles and Saxons got exterminated surprisingly quickly. So the minor powers were key and I think the Welsh brought me victory! Well, them and the Norman invasion...

My usual preference is to focus on the future rather than the past. As many of you know, I worked for 18 months as a forecast analyst, which meant forecasting sales in detail a few months ahead and predicting trends for the longer term. Intellectually it was a great job, but I hated sitting at a desk all day. Even a desk with a crystal ball on it.

I’m now back in R&D and am interested in predicting technology trends, especially those likely to affect the balance between print and other media. I read the trade press and various blogs and am always looking for recommendations on sources of interesting viewpoints. I love talking to people about this, in the office, at trade shows and occasionally socially. So, as you are all people whose views interest me, what do you think is important? Where should I be looking?

Saturday evening: Puerto Rico (takes a couple of hours) or similar with [livejournal.com profile] chaosdeathfish, [livejournal.com profile] igniscience and anyone else interested.

Sunday: Britannia with [livejournal.com profile] wimble, [livejournal.com profile] lanfykins and a fourth if we find one. This game may take all day.

Does that work for the people I've mentioned? Anyone else want to play either game?
glittertigger: (Default)
I've played lots of short games recently (Carcassonne, Settlers, Trans Europa) which I always enjoy. Especially when I win, of course :) However, I would like to find people who are up for longer games this weekend. Puerto Rico is good. I could cope with Arkham Horror. But what I really want is to find people with a day to spare and a desire to help me christen my new set of Britannia. It's finally been reissued! Anyone interested in any of the above?

The weekend started with [livejournal.com profile] zandev cooking me some tasty spicy chicken on Friday evening (without using any evil chilli). Saturday was taken up with shopping, reading and watching Cars on DVD (I liked both the animation and the plotline). Yesterday I visited [livejournal.com profile] secretrebel for tea and cakes in the morning and [livejournal.com profile] nickeyb for more tea and cakes in the afternoon. And then went to the pub, where we won the quiz. This isn't a healthy lifestyle and I must do some exercise soon...

At least I was on my feet and doing stuff today. I successfully produced a large vat of gloop in a rather pretty shade of blue.

At Intrusion on Tuesday, the music was good in a goth way but not particularly varied. There is usually more heavy rock and some bouncier 80s stuff to get everyone dancing. It was great to see [livejournal.com profile] davefish and [livejournal.com profile] keris again though.

Last night [livejournal.com profile] invisiblechoir fed me some excellent port and tried to expand my musical tastes (we overlap in the mid-90s, but otherwise our CD collections are very different). It turns out that I like Goldrush a lot and I was surprised by how much they sound like the Eagles in places (not in a bad way). The Elected are enjoyable too and I confirmed my appreciation of the solo material produced by Cerys Matthews since she moved to Nashville.

I'm chucking out the contents of a filing cabinet which belonged to one of my predecessors and hasn't been opened in ten years. It's carefully organised and is full of hand-written notes, with the graphs neatly hand-drawn on graph paper. It has to go (I need the space) but it feels sad throwing away quite so many hours of someone's work.

I feel the same about my university notes, with all the crystal structures drawn and coloured in by hand (yes, I'm that old!). I can't bring myself to chuck them away, even though I never look at them and the blue ink is fading.

Today I am wearing an all purple outfit, including a lovely skirt which [livejournal.com profile] secretrebel gave me yesterday. The decoration round the bottom of the skirt is a great match for the purple amulet I found in an art gallery a couple of weeks ago. I've worn the amulet twice and received five entirely unsolicited compliments, which pleases me. After a discussion with [livejournal.com profile] angry_marmot and others in a dark side-street last night, we've decided that it's a protective amulet, although my colleagues claim that I'm using it to give them the evil eye. Either way, it seems to provoke conversation. Curiously, the same amulet in green has got almost no reaction at all.

I will be visiting London to do some shopping on Saturday and have arranged to meet a friend for an early dinner. Is anyone interested in meeting up for lunch, or for drinks later in the evening?

I’m still getting used to this business of putting my thoughts in the public domain, but have decided to share a few of my cultural highlights of last year with you all.

Theatre:
An old favourite here. I very much enjoyed a production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. And [livejournal.com profile] i_ludicrous in stockings and suspenders was certainly memorable. An open-air production of Macbeth on a sultry evening with a group of female friends comes a close second, but I didn’t like the way Creation Theatre did the witches.

Books:
The best novel I read was We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver, which gets right to the heart of human weakness and doesn’t pull any punches. The best biography by miles was Stuart, A Life Backwards by Alexander Masters. And the book which made me laugh most was The Vesuvius Club, by Mark Gatiss.

Albums:
My stand-out album was In Between Dreams by Jack Johnson, which gave me a lift on all of the many occasions when I needed one. I fell in love with several country albums too and will cover those separately some other time.

Live music:
The Epstein of course. With an honourable mention for Jose Gonzalez.

Films:
I went to the cinema a few times, but either I saw the wrong films or this wasn’t a vintage year. Casino Royale has great action sequences, but the new Bond isn’t suave enough for me and the torture scene was gratuitously unpleasant. I didn’t see any better films though.

New Year's Eve was fun and [livejournal.com profile] zandev had over-catered just as much as usual. I also learned that [livejournal.com profile] markbanang makes wonderful sushi. I got a new evening dress for Christmas (emerald green velvet in a 1920s style) and was pleased to have an early excuse to wear it. There were lots of visitors from far afield (Madrid and Canada) and I've managed to spend plenty of time with them over the last few days, which has been very welcome.

I've never been one for planning ahead, but I'm slightly amazed to find that I've just put up my shiny new year planner and have nothing I need to put on it yet. All my weekends are also currently unplanned, so if you've been wanting to catch up with me, now would be a great time to suggest meeting up!
